Mobile County DA reports 66% drop in truancy since reinstating attendance program

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – As Mobile County students return to class for the 2026-2027 school year, District Attorney Keith Blackwood announced continued progress in reducing truancy and chronic absenteeism across Mobile County Public Schools.

During the 2025-2026 school year, truancy in Mobile County decreased an additional 31% and chronic absenteeism dropped 3% compared to the previous school year. Since Blackwood reinstated the Helping Families Initiative upon taking office, truancy has decreased 66% and chronic absenteeism has decreased 59%.
