Newport News Fire Department to host safety canvassing event after fatal Cindy Circle fire

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The Newport News Fire Department is set to hold a community safety canvassing event Tuesday morning following a fatal fire on Cindy Circle that left two people dead and two firefighters injured.

In an effort to educate citizens, fire department personnel will meet at the corner of Cindy Circle and Ronald Drive and walk through the neighborhood to interact and provide valuable fire and life safety information. It will consist of installing smoke alarms for homeowners, conducting home safety inspections, providing educational materials on preventing residential fires and more.

According to a release, the outreach is part of the fire department’s ongoing commitment to community risk reduction by providing simple steps residents can take to help prevent fires and protect their families.

“Our goal is not only to respond to emergencies but to help prevent them,” said Fire Chief Wesley Rogers. “By meeting residents where they live, we can have meaningful conversations about fire safety, answer questions and provide resources that can help save lives.”…
