Louisville Metro Police Department’s use of traffic stops is under scrutiny after WDRB News obtained documents that show officers search Black drivers more than twice as often as white drivers — yet are less likely to find anything illegal when they do.
In the wake of the reporting, Louisville Metro’s Inspector General called the findings alarming and wants police officials to release more details about traffic stops, identify the officers and divisions responsible for the largest disparities and develop a corrective action plan.
The police chief said a disparity in crime makes a disparity in traffic stops unavoidable, but department leaders will examine the data and ensure people “know that we’re not policing them, we’re policing to keep them safe.”…
