Since the passing of Gail Royal on Aug. 7 at age 74, hundreds of friends and customers have remembered the Montgomery restaurant owner was one of the most giving, loving, hard-working people they’d ever met.
Among them is Patrick Aitkin, a longtime advocate for Montgomery’s homeless population. Royal, owner of Gail’s Down the Street Cafe at 2741 Zelda Road, assisted Aitkin’s homeless outreach mission. Aitken also considered her a personal friend.
“Whenever I needed large amounts of food and I mean some good home cooking, all I had to do was give her a call and boy did she deliver in a big way,” Aitken wrote on the day Royal passed. “She never hesitated to be a blessing to those we were serving. Heaven is indeed sweeter today, and not just because of her bread pudding.”…
