BIRMINGHAM, AL — A strengthening upper-level ridge will bring higher heat levels to the Deep South later this week and over the weekend. Highs will be in the mid to upper 90s by Saturday and Sunday, continuing a typical stretch of August heat across Alabama.
Temperatures Climb Steadily Toward Nearly 100 Degrees
Data from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport shows high temperatures climbing steadily through the extended forecast, starting at 91 degrees Tuesday and rising to 98 degrees by Saturday, August 15, before holding in the 96 to 97 degree range through much of the following week.
Overnight lows are also rising alongside the daytime heat, climbing from the mid-70s early in the period to the upper 70s by the weekend, reflecting the building upper-level ridge across the region.
Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke Remain Serious Concerns
Forecasters are reminding residents that heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious conditions. Heat exhaustion, whose symptoms may include heavy sweating and a rapid pulse, results from the body overheating and is one of three heat-related syndromes, with heat cramps being the mildest and heat stroke the most severe.
Causes of heat exhaustion include exposure to high temperatures, particularly combined with high humidity, and strenuous physical activity. Without prompt treatment, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, a life-threatening condition.
Heat Stroke Requires Immediate Emergency Response
