Driver charged with failing to yield, resulting in death of man crossing road in wheelchair

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A Memphis man is now charged in the death of a 54-year-old man who was killed while crossing Madison Avenue in his wheelchair last spring.

A grand jury returned an indictment last week charging Owen Hipple, 24, with failing to yield, resulting in the death of William “Bill” Alexander.

A warrant was issued for Hipple’s arrest on August 6. He was booked four days later and released from jail the next day after posting a $5,000 bond.

Memphis police say Alexander died at the hospital on March 25, 2025, after a driver, later identified as Hipple, struck him as he was crossing the road in his electric wheelchair…
