Red Cross seeking more help from community with its blood supply

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The American Red Cross issued just the second emergency blood crisis in its history in late July. It said summertime is usually where a lot of traumatic injuries take place.

Executive Director of the Red Cross’s Southwestern Virginia Chapter, Jackie Grant, said there have been several factors at play this summer that have made stocking the shelves with blood more difficult.

“People are thinking about vacations, holidays and travel,” Grant said. “Then we also had air quality issues, and then we had heat at the early part of summer, and then we have a gastrointestinal bug.”…
