A wrong-way driver traveling north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 near State Route 76 slammed head-on into oncoming traffic this morning, triggering a five-vehicle pileup that killed one person and sent three others to the hospital for evaluation. All southbound lanes north of State Route 76 were shut down for the investigation, with fire crews forced to extricate at least one victim trapped in the wreckage south of Mission Road.
It’s not yet known where the wrong-way vehicle first entered the freeway, or whether impairment played a role in today’s crash. Those questions remain unanswered as CHP investigators work the scene.
A Corridor With a Grim Recent History
This is not the first fatal wreck at this exact interchange in recent months. Just two months ago, on June 11, two Good Samaritans — an off-duty emergency room nurse and a former Marine — were killed at the same I-15 and State Route 76 interchange when a suspected DUI driver struck them as they stopped to help at an earlier crash, according to CBS 8. The pattern goes back further. In April 2023, a 23-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter after his pickup truck plunged onto southbound I-15 near State Route 76, rolling over and killing a 4-year-old girl and an adult woman, per the same station’s earlier report. Four other people were injured in that crash. And in February 2020, three charter bus passengers died and 18 more were injured when their bus swerved in heavy rain and rolled down an embankment just south of the interchange, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, with several victims ejected during the rollover.
More Recent Closures Along the Same Stretch
Even setting aside fatalities, this segment of I-15 has seen repeated major disruptions. Just this spring, a multi-vehicle crash and vehicle fire on April 16 shut down all northbound lanes near State Route 76, sending three people to the hospital, including one with major injuries transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, according to Valley News.
