Orleans Sheriff Michelle Woodfork creates advisory group for jail security, safety

Orleans Parish Sheriff Michelle Woodfork has recruited a group of outside experts and government officials to develop recommendations for improving the safety and security of New Orleans’ notoriously troubled jail.

The independent advisory group — called the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office Security and Accountability Council — was established through an executive order signed by Woodfork on May 4, her first day in office.

The group held its first meeting in July and will be tasked with conducting “a comprehensive assessment of the safety, security, and structural integrity of all OPSO facilities and operations.”…
