Dry lightning, erratic winds possible as Timber Fire grows

The cooling trend will continue Wednesday in the Bay Area, but a small storm system approaching the California coast could create a dangerous wrinkle near the ongoing Timber Fire in the Big Sur area.

A small area of low pressure spinning offshore will slowly drift toward the Central Coast on Wednesday, bringing enough moisture and instability for a slight chance of thunderstorms over Monterey and San Benito counties.

The odds of a storm are low, but the consequences could be significant. Any high-based thunderstorms that develop near the Timber Fire could produce dry lightning and gusty, erratic winds, potentially sparking new fires or complicating efforts to contain the existing blaze…
