NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Perseid meteor shower will peak on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
According to NASA, the Perseids are considered the best meteor shower of the year. This is because the meteors are bright and leave long streaks of light as they impact Earth’s atmosphere.
Hot & humid days ahead with a few storms
The other reason why they are considered the best meteor shower of the year is because there are so many meteors. NASA said during the peak nights of Wednesday, Aug. 12 and Thursday, Aug. 13, between 50 and 100 meteors can be spotted each hour!
To see the most meteors, you need to get as far away from city lights as possible. If you live in a bigger city like Nashville, Clarksville, or Murfreesboro, the light pollution from streetlights can greatly reduce the number of meteors that you see.
NASA said the meteors will be visible from 10 p.m. until dawn, with the best viewing time being the pre-dawn hours. Dawn in Nashville on those nights is at approximately 5:35 a.m.
There’s a solar eclipse coming this week… But most of the U.S. won’t be able to see it
Of course, the skies have to be clear for the meteors to be visible. The latest forecast model data shows pretty good conditions on both Wednesday and Thursday nights.
