A major construction project will close parts of Highway 101 in San Francisco later this month, with work set to continue through 2028.
Crews in orange vests will swarm the “Hospital Curve” stretch of the freeway, fixing drainage systems, repaving concrete and replacing the median barrier. The 70-year old roadway extends from Candlestick Point Recreation Area to the Interstate 80 Junction that leads toward the Bay Bridge. Perpetual battering from cars and trucks has scuffed the medians and left cracks in the pavement, requiring numerous repairs to extend the highway’s useful life.
But ambitious road projects can’t proceed without some disruption for drivers. In this case, Caltrans will close two northbound and two southbound lanes between the Cesar Chavez and 17th Street exits, starting at 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21 and ending at 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24.
