MADISON, Wis. — Dina Nina Martinez-Rutherford won the Democratic primary for Wisconsin’s 76th Assembly District, leading a large field in the state’s most progressive district.
The win gives Martinez-Rutherford a runway to become Wisconsin’s first transgender member of the State Legislature.
Martinez-Rutherford garnered 6,170 votes, with former Madison alder Juliana Bennett finishing second with 5,667. All five candidates ran on progressive platforms in a district whose previous representative in the Assembly was gubernatorial candidate and Democratic Socialist Rep. Francesca Hong…
