Person of interest ID’ed, public’s help requested, in fatal Jersey City shooting

A person of interest has been identified, with the public’s help being requested to make an arrest for a fatal Jersey City shooting that occurred last night, authorities said.

Shortly after 8 p.m. yesterday, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of an injured man inside an apartment at 200 Cornelison Ave., according to Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello.

Responding officers located an unresponsive man – later identified as Omar Smith, 38, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound(s).

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause and manner of death are pending with the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office…
