What began as a routine eye examination for a Midlands man ultimately led to the early detection of ocular melanoma after Dr. Katie Davis, Doctor of Optometry at Vision Therapy Institute in West Columbia, identified a small freckle on the back of his eye.
During a comprehensive dilated eye exam, Davis discovered a choroidal nevus, commonly known as an eye freckle. While many are harmless, some can develop into ocular melanoma. Davis began monitoring the area with Optos ultra-widefield retinal imaging, allowing her to document and compare changes over time.
“Years ago, we relied on drawings and manual measurements,” Davis said. “Today’s imaging allows us to compare photographs over time and identify even subtle changes much more accurately.”…
