Man found guilty of seriously injuring Kalamazoo Township officer in 2025 shootout

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A Kalamazoo man will be sentenced for shooting and seriously injuring a Kalamazoo Township Police officer in March 2025.

A jury on Wednesday found Kenyun Smith, 25, guilty of assault with intent to commit murder, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing police officers and several felony firearm charges, according to Kalamazoo County Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Getting.
