Kalamazoo Animal Rescue (KAR) was founded in 1991 to rescue homeless cats and dogs. For over 30 years, KAR has been a soft place to land for animals in need of help, backed by countless volunteers and donors who generously give their time, energy, and financial support.
In 2017, we launched our in-house spay and neuter clinic, addressing the critical issue of pet overpopulation. Our clinic not only serves KAR animals but also provides affordable spay and neuter services for the community, helping to ensure a healthier future for pets in our area. In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we established our Low Cost Wellness Clinic in 2020. This initiative was designed to help pet owners access essential routine vaccinations, reducing the risk of preventable diseases and promoting the overall health of our furry companions.
In 2022, we reached a milestone by purchasing our own building, and we proudly moved into our new facility in March 2023. This new space enables us to enhance our programs and continue our mission of rescue, care, and community support. We aim to assist the underserved community who cannot afford other animal hospitals in the area. This allows people to keep their animals in their homes rather than surrendering them due to veterinary expenses.
Impact story
In 2025, we had 764 adoptions, 1,043 spay/neuters, and raised 255 bottle babies. That work continues, as we have recently opened our new medical department with a full-time veterinarian. We are unique in that we will take in sick or injured animals that other shelters are unable to help. We have seen some very hard-luck, life-or-death cases turn into happy outcomes.
