SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak Wednesday night, meaning we’ll have our best chance to see the most meteors per hour. The shower remains active through Aug. 24, but tonight is when we could see the greatest number of shooting stars across the sky… about 50-100 meteors per hour!
The Perseids happen every August as Earth passes through debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. As those tiny pieces of debris enter our atmosphere, they burn up and create the bright, fast-moving streaks we know as shooting stars. The Perseids are also known for producing colorful fireballs, making this one of the best meteor showers of the year.
The best viewing will be from around midnight through dawn. Look toward the northeast, where you’ll find the constellation Perseus. For the best view, get away from city lights and give your eyes about 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness…
