One of the last things Forrest Higgins, a math teacher at Gonzaga Prep high school, expected to do at nearly 50 years old was move into his parents’ basement.
But around 9 pm on Sunday, Aug. 9, instead of pulling into his own family’s driveway in the Indian Trail neighborhood after a week vacationing on the north fork of the Coeur d’Alene River, Higgins, his wife, Nina, their 17-year-old daughter, Maya, and son, Peter (who turns 14 this weekend), did exactly that, along with their dog, Coco.
“[It’s] a little surreal this morning, we just got back into town,” Higgins told the Inlander on Monday morning, Aug. 10. “We have a big family reunion the first week of August every year. … So when our house was burning, I was floating down the river with my family, and like, living my best life, and had no idea what was going on.”…
