Augusta man found guilty of shooting SCHP Trooper to be sentenced in federal court

(WJBF) – Derrick Gathers, an Augusta man who was found guilty in the shooting of a South Carolina State Trooper, is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court on Thursday, Aug. 13.

In February, Gathers plead guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm following a 2023 traffic stop during which he shot S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Corporal B.A. Frazier. He survived the murder attempt.

U.S. Attorney Bryan Stirling and law enforcement partners will hold a news conference outside the courthouse following Gathers’ hearing after the 10 a.m. hearing Thursday outside the Matthew J. Perry Federal Courthouse located at 901 Richland Street in Columbia, SC.

In the federal case, he faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison, a fine up to $250,000, restitution, and a term of supervision to follow the term of imprisonment…
