NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The city of Norfolk is moving forward with plans to demolish the long-abandoned Globe Iron site with hopes of redeveloping the site for affordable housing.
Earlier this month, the city put out a request for bids to contractors who may be interested in clearing the 17-acres in Bruce’s Park. Aside from being the longtime home of a steel fabrication facility, it is one of the largest underused areas Norfolk left.
Norfolk officials, neighbors concerned about proposed waste facility
Since 2021, plans have called for the property to be redeveloped with “missing middle” housing. Missing middle is defined as housing that provides diverse housing options along the spectrum of affordability, according to the National League of Cities. Think duplexes, fourplexes, multiplexes, cottage courts and courtyard buildings.
While the city has budgeted $3.85 million for the work, Wednesday, Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Newport News) handed over a $1 million check to help offset the demolition costs…
