Spokane hatchery fish healthy despite staff forced out by wildfire

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW) confirmed fish at the Spokane Fish Hatchery stayed healthy after staff was forced to evacuate during the Spokane Complex fires.

Hatchery manager Kevin Flowers said it was an unusual moment for the facility as flames burned on the bluff across the Little Spokane River from the property and evacuation traffic backed up on the way out.

“This was the first time in years and years and many hatcheries that I’ve worked at that I’ve ever been evacuated,” said Flowers.

According to the department, three staff members and their families who live on the property also had to leave their homes, pets and belongings behind…
