Tears trigger alert to thwart $385,000 gold scam

CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. (WOOD) — When an elderly woman came into Josh VanderWerf’s coin store asking for $385,000 in gold, red flags popped up for the Cedar Springs businessman, who recalled a similar scenario unfolding at a nearby coin store.

“She didn’t ask many questions and didn’t know what she wanted,” VanderWerf recalled of the mid-July visit to his shop, Cedar Springs Coins and Jewelry. “When you’re buying $385,000 in gold, you kind of know what you’re looking to get.”

When he questioned the Casnovia woman, she grew quiet.

“She just started crying,” VanderWerf said. “She was afraid for herself and her family.”…
