One of Texas’ oldest family stores is closing after 103 years

A more than 100-year-old furniture store that survived three generations within the family is shutting its doors permanently.

Baker’s Main Street Furniture traces its roots to 1923, when August Marvin “A.M.” Baker opened a hardware and general store in Wylie before relocating the business to Garland on 524 Main Street nine years later and expanding into furniture, according to the company’s news release.

Over the years, the business grew along with its home, eventually becoming a distinctive three-story showroom and a familiar landmark in historic downtown Garland…
