A young Oregon boy who climbed an overpass while experiencing a mental health crisis was safely rescued after more than an hour of “delicate and dangerous” negotiation, officials said.
The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) said officers responded at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, to a report of a juvenile boy “in crisis” on an overpass near Northeast 162nd Avenue and Northeast Russell Street. The boy, reportedly just 10 years old, had climbed onto the overpass’s fence, putting him in a “precarious and potentially life-threatening position.”
Responding officers quickly requested assistance from PPB’s Crisis Negotiation Team, Behavioral Health Unit, and the Special Emergency Reaction Team’s Rope Cadre. Portland Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene…
