76-year-old Mobile man sentenced to 20 years for 2025 Fourth of July shooting

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A judge has sentenced 76-year-old Walter Thames to 20 years in prison for the shooting death of 65-year-old Patricia Odoms.

Thames was convicted in May of shooting Odoms with a shotgun on July 4, 2025, at a motel on Matzenger Drive near Dauphin Island Parkway and Interstate 10, where he was living.

Prosecutors initially charged Thames with murder, but the jury returned a verdict on the lesser charge of provocation manslaughter…
