Portland, Ore. – More than 12 hours after city officials announced a contractor was hired to take down the historic Centennial Mills warehouse in Northwest Portland, nearly two weeks after it was gutted by a four-alarm fire.
Eugene-based Staton Companies was chosen to lead the demolition, following the August second fire. City officials have said leaving the building standing puts the surrounding neighborhood at risk of asbestos exposure and other dangers, if the structure falls unexpectedly.
Just around the corner from the warehouse, Fields Park is currently is surrounded by a security fence. Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality hired a company to pick up fire-related debris and other trash, to mitigate risk when the building does come down…
