Another Independence official has confidential deal after leaving. What’s being hidden?

Another former top Independence Police Department official entered into a separation agreement with the city when he left the department earlier this summer.

Former Deputy Chief Jason Petersen has a separation agreement with Independence following his retirement in June, city officials acknowledged in response to a public records request from The Star.

But the city declined to release the agreement or other records related to Petersen’s departure, citing a provision of Missouri’s Sunshine Law that allows certain personnel records to remain closed.
