One upper Neuse site fails weekly Swim Guide test

One site failed to meet recreational water-quality standards on the upper Neuse this week: Penny’s Bend on the Eno River in Durham.

“Spikes in bacteria levels can often be attributed to rain events,” said Sound Rivers Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper, Katey Zimmerman. “This region did get about an inch of rain in the past week, so it is likely that stormwater runoff caused some higher bacteria levels.”

A “Swim Guide fail” points to elevated levels of fecal bacteria, which can come with increased risk of gastrointestinal illness and skin infections for pets and humans alike…
