Mayor Mamdani responds after man charged with hate crimes in synagogue attack

NEW YORK (PIX11) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is reacting after a man was arrested and charged with hate crimes following an attack inside a Midtown synagogue during Shabbat services Friday night.

The incident happened at Central Synagogue on Lexington Avenue, where police say 46-year-old Larry Montes of the Bronx disrupted services and allegedly assaulted a 63-year-old woman and a security officer before being taken into custody. The incident was captured on the synagogue’s livestream.

Montes faces two counts of assault as a hate crime and criminal mischief as a hate crime, according to the NYPD.
