Saturday, August 15, has been another very hot day in this prolonged heat wave in Arkansas. In Little Rock, the official temperature at the airport reached 103 degrees again Saturday afternoon, tying the hottest temperature recorded so far this year in Little Rock. But Sunday, August 16, could be even hotter.
Due to the extreme heat, the Arkansas Storm Team has designated Sunday, August 16, as an Alert Day.
Temperatures are likely to reach the triple digits across many communities, maybe even tying or breaking the hottest temperatures recorded this summer. Heat index values will be dangerous, in excess of 110 degrees in some communities.
Heat safety precautions are strongly encouraged.
The wildfire risk continues, too. It’s strongly encouraged to avoid all outdoor burning, even if you’re not under a burn ban yet. However, most of the state is under a burn ban until further notice, prohibiting all outdoor burning. Activities that involve sparks or flames should be avoided or, if they have to occur, carried out with extreme caution.
Sunday, August 16, there’s a small chance of a few showers and storms. This is especially the case in northern Arkansas, as a cold front approaches from southern Missouri. A storm or two, mainly in northern Arkansas, could be strong.
The heat wave continues into the work week. Tiny rain chances continue next week, too.
But late next week, a front may bring a bit of relief from the triple-digit heat. It’s far out in the forecast now, so things can still change, but the latest guidance suggests temperatures dropping into the upper 90s by Friday, August 21, and into the following weekend.
