Albuquerque Public Schools installs nearly 100 vape detectors at its 13 high schools

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque Public Schools recently installed 93 vape detectors at its 13 high schools, all in an effort to cut down on teen vaping. “It’s becoming a problem,” APS parent Valerie Lallement said. “They’re getting the vapes, they’re coming to school, and it’s becoming a distraction.”

The devices were installed in student restrooms, which is where district officials say teen vaping most prominently takes place on campus. “How do we ensure that we are doing everything we can, that when a student goes into the restroom, they are not greeted by vapers or any kind of negative, prohibited behavior while on campus?” APS Deputy Superintendent of Operations Antonio Gonzales said.

APS parent Valerie Lallement said the vaping is affecting the kids’ schoolwork, and she hopes the devices work so there’s one less place for kids to vape. “It’s a deterrent, and anything that’s going to deter these kids from bringing vapes to school or vaping on school grounds I think is a good thing,” Lallement said…
