North Charleston’s roads are notoriously dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians. Between 2020 and 2024, nearly 130 traffic deaths occurred on these roads. A previous Post and Courier analysis found four of the five most dangerous roads in Charleston County are within North Charleston limits.
The city is pledging to curb the high rate of traffic deaths and serious injuries through a “vision zero” approach, joining nearby municipalities like Charleston, Moncks Corner, Mount Pleasant and Summerville that have already made this commitment. The goal is to eliminate traffic deaths by 2045.
That means creating a coordinated approach with other agencies for safer road designs, increased driver education and awareness, and improved enforcement and emergency response. The pledge ties in with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program that awarded North Charleston a grant to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to make these types of changes…
