Villager sues Chop House at Lake Sumter and SLCDD after tripping over cable wire

A Village of Charlotte resident is suing a local restaurant owner and the Sumter Landing Community Development District after allegedly suffering permanent injuries from tripping over a low cable wire at Lake Sumter Landing.

Debra Welch filed the lawsuit in Sumter County Circuit Court against Acorn Investments, LLC, which owns Chop House at Lake Sumter, and the Sumter Landing Community Development District (SLCDD). Chop House is located at 1045 Old Camp Road.

According to the complaint, the incident allegedly occurred on June 14, 2025, while Welch was visiting the establishment’s outdoor dining area. Welch claims she “suddenly tripped and fell over a single low cable wire fastened between two fence-like posts.”

The complaint describes the item as an “ankle-high steel cable wire connecting two railing posts,” noting that several other wires along the posts were either missing or unfastened at the time.

Welch alleges the fall caused severe and permanent bodily injury, pain and suffering, disability, medical expenses, and a loss of capacity to enjoy life…
