Judge denies Carlos Watts’ request for self-representation in Heather Kelley case

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The boyfriend of missing Portage mother Heather Kelley will not be representing himself in court.

During a status conference Monday, Carlos Watts Jr. asked a judge to serve as his own attorney, but his request was denied, according to Kalamazoo County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Williams.

The decision comes as Watts’ case continues to move through the courts nearly six years after Kelley disappeared — with a pretrial conference scheduled for October.
