Suspended FCPS superintendent proposed $1.6 million settlement

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Newly obtained legal documents reveal that suspended Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins demanded a $1.6 million lump-sum payout—equivalent to four years of salary and benefits—to settle ongoing employment disputes with the school board.

The demands, outlined in a letter sent by Washington, D.C.-based attorney Amos N. Jones, showcase a rapidly escalating legal battle following the school board’s decision in June to place Liggins on paid administrative leave.

The June Demand: ‘A 72-Hour Global Resolution’

The letter, dated Saturday, June 20, 2026, was sent to the Fayette County Board of Education just ten days after the board voted 5-0 to place Liggins on leave and appoint Dr. Bill Bradford as acting superintendent.

In the letter, Jones proposed a “72-Hour Global Resolution” valuing Liggins’s remaining contract at approximately $400,000 per year. Jones argued that because Liggins had three years and 10 days remaining on his contract (which runs through June 30, 2029), the school board should provide him with a lump-sum payment of $1.6 million…
