McDonald’s Faces Decline in Spending Among Low-Income Customers, New Data Reveals
Recent consumer analytics indicate that McDonald’s is experiencing a downturn in sales from low-income diners, highlighting challenges in maintaining its traditional customer base. According to Numerator, a market research firm, spending by customers from households earning $40,000 or less annually decreased by 2.4% year-over-year during McDonald’s latest fiscal quarter. This drop marks the company’s first quarterly decline in this segment in the past year and translates to an estimated $310 million in lost revenue.
In contrast, competitor Burger King saw a modest 0.3% increase in sales among the same demographic during the period, underscoring the competitive pressures McDonald’s faces in the fast-food sector.
McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski acknowledged that issues with the rollout of the chain’s recent value menu, which features items priced at $3 or less, contributed to the weaker performance. “Although we’ve restored our overall value and affordability leadership, our restaurant-level results show that execution was inconsistent across the system,” he stated during a recent earnings call.
The company’s comparable U.S. sales growth slowed to 0.8% in the second quarter, while rivals including Burger King and casual dining chains like Chili’s reported stronger results, often supported by their own value-focused promotions.
In response to rising costs, some McDonald’s patrons have reported shifting their dining habits by visiting other fast-food chains more frequently or opting to cook at home.
Despite these challenges, certain McDonald’s offerings continue to attract customers across income levels. For instance, the chain’s fried apple pie, a nostalgic item reintroduced for America’s 250th birthday celebration this summer, was purchased by nearly 12% of U.S. households, according to Numerator.
As McDonald’s navigates these market dynamics, the company’s ability to effectively execute its value propositions will remain critical to regaining momentum among price-sensitive consumers.
