A rescue flight carrying more than 60 shelter dogs and puppies touched down at Chester County Airport on Monday, giving the animals a shot at forever homes thousands of miles from the overcrowded Southern California shelters where they started. The dogs were processed on arrival before being split between Brandywine Valley SPCA’s West Chester campus and the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, with some pups potentially ready for adoption as early as next week.
According to 6abc, the flight was a partnership between Brandywine Valley SPCA, Riverside County Animal Services, and the ASPCA, and veterinarians will evaluate the dogs before they enter the adoption pipeline. As We News reports, the relocation ran through BVSPCA’s Second Chance Program, and the group specifically included 48 dogs from Riverside County municipal facilities plus 10 more from other Southern California rescues, according to a statement from Riverside County Department of Animal Services.
Before boarding, several of the puppies got an unusual send-off: a turn on the red carpet at the Astra TV Awards in Los Angeles, where they were photographed alongside celebrities including Jason Ritter, William H. Macy, and Cedric the Entertainer, per the same We News account. The appearance was meant to draw national attention to the animals’ plight ahead of their cross-country trip.
