A pregnant Hayward woman yelled at her boyfriend for smoking marijuana near her, and police say he responded by firing three shots at her as she tried to run away. The shooting happened at about 2:20 AM on July 14 outside the woman’s grandmother’s home on Dixon Street, and the 18-year-old Sacramento man now faces attempted murder and other felony charges in Alameda County.
According to The Mercury News, the confrontation began as an argument between the suspect and his pregnant girlfriend over his smoking marijuana in her presence. Police say the dispute escalated quickly: the suspect allegedly choked the woman and put her in a headlock before she managed to break free and run. As she fled, police say he fired his pistol three times at her, missing with all three shots.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned that exposure to secondhand marijuana smoke during pregnancy carries serious health risks, since THC and other toxic chemicals can pass directly to the fetus through the mother’s bloodstream — a health concern that may explain why the woman objected to the smoking in the first place.
