FIRST ALERT: Hot Week Followed by Storms and a Weekend Cool Down

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The heat has taken a step back, but it’s still hot through Thursday. A cold front ushers in the chance for rain Friday, followed by a cooler, less humid weekend.

Tuesday & Wednesday: Quiet and Hot

The heat and humidity continue across Western Carolinas, though it backs off just slightly. Sunny skies dominate Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the mid 90s in the Upstate and mid to upper 80s in the mountains.

Heat index values in the Upstate approach 99-102 degrees, so stay cool and hydrated. On the plus side, it’s a dry day which gives us a welcome break from the daily thunderstorms.

Overnight lows dip into the mid 60s for the mountains which is about where we should be for mid August. However, the Upstate only drops to the low to mid 70s making for a warmer night.

Thursday: Storm Chances Begin

The pattern shifts as moisture increases and a weak boundary approaches. Thursday starts off sunny before isolated to widely scattered showers and thunderstorms develop during the afternoon and evening. Some storms may produce strong wind gusts, particularly across the higher elevations. Highs jump a bit to the mid 90s for the Upstate and the upper 80s in the mountains giving us one more day of well above normal highs.

Friday: Best Chance for Storms

Friday looks like the most active day as widespread showers and thunderstorms develop in the afternoon and persist into evening. A few of these storms could produce strong downbursts or damaging straight-line winds, so keep an eye on your outdoor plans.

Highs are a bit cooler thanks to the rain and uptick in cloud cover. We top out in the low 90s in the Upstate and the mid 80s in the mountains, but it’s still quite humid. Feels like temperatures in the Upstate are in the upper 90s.

Saturday: Cooler, Storms Linger

A strengthening cold front approaches Saturday, giving us another shot at some rain. Showers and thunderstorms develop around midday and continue on and off through evening. It’s not a washout, so don’t cancel any outdoor plans, but keep an eye on the forecast as we get closer.

Highs dip into the upper 80s for the Upstate and the low 80s in the mountains which is about where we should be for late August. The humidity starts to back off too, so it feels more comfortable. Plus low drop into the mid to upper 60s making for the most pleasant night we’ve had in a week and a half.

Sunday and Beyond: Relief Arrives

The cold front moves through late Saturday into early Sunday, clearing out the warm, humid air mass. Sunday turns sunny and pleasant with highs settling into the low 90s Upstate and mid 80s in the mountains. The humidity also continues to fall giving us some gorgeous late summer weather. Overnight lows drop in the 60s once again…
