Men charged for connection to gift card scheme at Murfreesboro gas stations

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — After obtaining thousands in unauthorized funds from gas stations across Murfreesboro, authorities have taken two men believed to be connected to the scheme into custody.

The Murfreesboro Police Department said 28-year-old Eric Smith and 43-year-old Jerrell Clement, both of Michigan, entered multiple 7-11 and Speedway locations between Aug. 16 and 17.

While at the gas stations, the men reportedly manipulated cashiers to load $490 onto Propel gift cards and only paid $1 in cash. However, the remaining balance was never paid.

Surveillance footage showed the men arrived and left each location in a dark blue Chrysler Pacifica. Officials said license plate reader technology helped identify the vehicle’s Michigan license plate, which was registered to a car rental company…
