DOJ reaches tentative agreement with hospital charged in Perwaiz scandal

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A tentative deferred prosecution agreement has been reached between the United States Attorney’s Office and Chesapeake Regional Medical Center (CRMC) surrounding charges that stem from Dr. Javaid Perwaiz’s performance of unnecessary surgeries at the medical facility.

Former employees say they told CRMC leadership about Perwaiz

The Department of Justice announced the potential deal Friday. It would allow both parties to avoid going through a criminal trial. A federal judge will need to approve it for it to take effect.

Under the terms of the publicly released agreement, Chesapeake Regional would be required to “admit certain facts” and retain an independent monitor to ensure compliance with and implement the other changes laid out in the agreement. The hospital will have to pay restitution to health care benefit programs, such as Medicaid and Medicare, and establish a $12.8 million fund for patients who have medical records showing they had procedures performed by Perwaiz at CRMC…
