A large burgundy mural has popped up near Café Central in Downtown El Paso, and it is not advertising anything you can quite put a name to yet. Peer through a small peephole cut into the artwork and you will find leopard-print wallpaper, wine and cocktail glasses, and chopsticks arranged like clues in a scavenger hunt for a restaurant called Anomalía, which carries the tagline “a table set for the daring.”
The mural sits near one of the border region’s most storied dining institutions — Café Central, which opened in 1918 in Ciudad Juárez during Prohibition before relocating across the border into Downtown El Paso. According to the El Paso Times, Anomalía is expected to open in Downtown El Paso this fall, though the exact address, opening date, and menu remain unannounced. Reporter Natassia Paloma’s story notes that Anomalía has a newly launched website and an Instagram page, and that the site offers a guest-list signup for those eager to get in early.
Who’s Behind the Curtain
Per the outlet’s reporting, Anomalía’s website identifies the teams behind Ardeo Brasas Kitchen and Yoko as the creative forces building the concept, describing their work as something new, daring, rare, and unprecedented in El Paso. Both Ardeo and Yoko are Juárez restaurants, and Great American Hospitality is also involved in the project, though the company had not responded to the El Paso Times’ request for information at the time of that story’s publication.
Ardeo Brasas Kitchen opened in late 2017 inside the La Morín dining complex on Gómez Morín Boulevard in Ciudad Juárez, built around an open-kitchen concept centered on wood-fired meats and international fusion, according to A Diario Network. Yoko Asian Kitchen followed inside the same complex in August 2023, introducing teppanyaki, a sushi bar, and Asian fusion dishes, as reported by Black Magazine. Great American Hospitality itself operates more than 40 restaurants across Mexico and Texas, including Great American Steakhouse, Applebee’s, Wendy’s, and the La Morín complex, per A Diario Network’s coverage of the group.
