McKinney recall of mayor and three council members gains Keith Self’s backing

A McKinney recall drive targeting the mayor and three City Council members has drawn support from U.S. Rep. Keith Self after the council approved a mosque site plan, according to The Dallas Morning News and The Dallas Express.

Self, a Republican whose district includes McKinney, said in an Aug. 16 Facebook video that he signed the petition so the council would “listen to the citizens of McKinney.” He had urged the council on Aug. 4 to reject the McKinney Islamic Association site plan.

Five voters filed a recall affidavit Aug. 11 citing a “loss of public confidence” in Mayor Bill Cox and council members Justin Beller, Geré Feltus and Ernest Lynch. The filing does not name the mosque vote as a legal ground for removal. Organizers have said the campaign also involves spending, growth and whether City Hall listens to residents…
