ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – In an effort to design and build more age-friendly housing options while also giving students hands-on real-life experience, the City of Albuquerque, in conjunction with the University of New Mexico and AARP, is holding a design competition. It’s open to both UNM students and architecture professionals to design both the neighborhood location and the homes themselves. The idea behind the project is to design cottages for people to be able to age in place.

“Most of us as we age want to be in our own space,” AARP New Mexico State Director Joseph Roybal-Sanchez said. “We don’t want to be uprooted and displaced to a long-term care facility or a nursing home. So the idea is to allow people to stay in their homes for as long as they choose to.”…
