Airline Pilots Called It ‘Rolling the Dice’

After typing a couple of paragraphs, it took a moment to realize that the topic I had originally intended for this column had disappeared. Instead, the words I had written became a trigger for reflection, which is not a process I often entertain.

The reflection involved decisions that significantly affected the trajectory of my career path. Perhaps the insight will help guide those following in similar footsteps.

For me and my colleagues, the phrase “rolling the dice” meant it was a gamble as to what airline would prove to be a successful career choice. The same is true today and will be tomorrow. It doesn’t matter whether an aspiring pilot enters an airline-sponsored ab initio program that has a direct career path or climbs the aviation employment ladder from the outside. No one can predict an airline’s prosperity and how a pilot’s advancement through the ranks will be affected over the years…
