VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach Public Works has announced Wednesday there’s been an increase in the number of mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile virus in the last three weeks, according to the City of Virginia Beach.
The mosquitoes were collected in the following neighborhoods:
- Aragona
- the Kempsville area
- College Park
- Brigadoon Forest
- the Thalia area
- Plaza
- Pembroke
- Bay Colony
- Green Run
- Wesleyan Pines
The city has confirmed that Mosquito Control has escalated their treatment activities in those neighborhoods. Daytime crews are focusing on treating standing water in the neighborhoods, while the nighttime crews are treating those same areas as weather permits.
The city has advised residents to take the following precautions:
- Pour out any containers on your property that collect water on a weekly basis as standing water is a breeding site for mosquitoes.
- Wear long sleeves and long pants, as well as loose-fitting, light-color clothing.
- Reduce outdoor activity around dusk and dawn, which is when mosquitoes with West Nile virus are most active.
- Consider using insect repellant but be sure to follow all label instructions.
The city has also confirmed that no human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Virginia Beach…
