No body contact advisory issued for Wabasis Lake and Myers Lake after E. coli tests

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Kent County Health Department (KCHD) issued a no body contact advisory Wednesday for two lakes.

Residents are advised to avoid two lakes, Wabasis Lake at Wabasis Campground and Myers Lake at Myers Lake Park, due to elevated levels of E. coli bacteria, KCHD said in a release.

Routine water samples collected Tuesday showed levels exceeding the state’s recreational water quality standard for total body contact recreation of 300 E. coli per 100 milliliters of water.

Exposure to elevated E. coli levels can increase the risk of gastrointestinal illness, infections of the ears, eyes, nose, and skin, according to health officials.

While the advisory is in effect, community members are advised to avoid all body contact with the water, including:

  • Swimming
  • Wading
  • Splashing
  • Water sports or other activities that involve contact with the water
