Vaux’s Swifts just weeks away from roosting in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Watch parties at some of Portland’s most prominent chimneys are just weeks away as the Vaux’s swifts are expected to return to the region in mid-September.

Meteorological autumn starts September 1. That means the Vaux’s swifts are on the move. Migrating south, the swifts are expected to arrive in Portland by mid-September. That means Portland-area bird-watching gatherings are just weeks away.

For years, one of the biggest roosting locations in the world was Chapman Elementary School, according to the Bird Alliance of Oregon. That hasn’t been the case over the last two years. Leaving the long-staning roost at Chapman Elementary School has been replaced by other Portland-area chimneys, including another elementary school’s, Abernethy Elementary School.

In September of 2025, the roosting Vaux’s Swifts could be seen not only at Abernethy Elementary School, but also at many other local, larger chimneys. As for this year’s favorite roosting spot, Portlanders will have to wait and see where the birds land…
