CINCINNATI — Fitness has long been a major part of Michael Lomonaco’s life. So when his son decided to join the Air Force in 2024, Lomonaco made it his mission to train alongside him as he prepared for the physical demands ahead.
But instead of getting stronger, Lomonaco noticed something was wrong. The more he exercised, the more he struggled with fatigue and shortness of breath.
“I started to do more running, a little more pushups, a little more sit-ups to meet those standards,” Lomonaco said. “I found I was struggling the more I tried. It’s almost like the reverse of what you would expect to happen.”…
